RS Automation , a company specializing in robot motion control, is developing a capacitive robot drive module as a national project. Recently, we have completed a patent application for the electrostatic capacitive encoder technology, one of the robot module components . The company has applied for a total of two related patents .
In 2023, RS Automation participated in the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' technology innovation development project 'Development of a drive module for a robot servo motor using an electrostatic capacitance encoder ' as a contracted research and development institution together with Seoul National University and Chungnam National University . Through this project, the company has developed an integrated drive module ( smart actuator ) equipped with an encoder , drive , motor, and its own algorithm by integrating core robot control technologies .
Capacitive encoders are a key component of various guided weapons , such as the Israeli military's air defense system, ' Iron Dome ' , and domestic low-altitude interceptor missiles. They are evaluated as essential components in the defense industry due to their characteristics of being unaffected by vibration, radio interference , electromagnetic interference (EMI), and radio frequency interference (RFI) .
The electrostatic capacity encoder being developed by RS Automation is 20% to 30% smaller and uses only 10% of the electricity of a typical encoder . Therefore, it is expected to be highly useful in various future cutting-edge industries, such as premium mobile robots and ultra-small drones, where small size and low power consumption are essential .
With the development of the capacitive encoder progressing smoothly, the company plans to complete the development of the frameless motor and DC drive to be mounted on the drive module this year and begin the final assembly of the drive module .
