Amoji, Establishment of Korean Branch

AMOGY (CEO Sunghoon Woo), a company specializing in ammonia-based carbon-free power generation systems, announced that it will begin operating in the Korean market in earnest by opening a branch in Pangyo Techno Valley.

With the establishment of this Korean branch, Amoji plans to strengthen cooperation with major investors and partners such as SK Innovation, Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai, Hanwha, Korea Zinc, and SV Investment, and maximize synergy with the hydrogen and ammonia technology supply chain in the marine and power generation sectors.

“Korea is an important market with strong policy support for the activation of the hydrogen economy and world-class manufacturing, marine, hydrogen and ammonia technology capabilities,” said Seonghoon Woo, CEO and co-founder of Amogi. “With the establishment of this branch in Korea, we will work more closely with partners and investors in Korea and contribute to the realization of Korea’s vision of carbon neutrality and decarbonization, and in the process, to the growth of new industries in Korea.”

◆ Korea, positioned as a leader in clean energy based on hydrogen and ammonia

Korea is an early adopter of ammonia and hydrogen fuel technology and has been providing strong policy support for the development of clean tech industries. This has been a major factor in Amoji’s entry into the Korean market. In 2024, Korea became the first country in the world to implement hydrogen and ammonia-based power generation auctions under the Clean Hydrogen Production Standard (CHPS), and recently enacted the Distributed Energy Act (DEA) to promote distributed power generation to meet increasing power demand.

In particular, Korea, which has the world's top three shipyards, is emerging as a center for marine technology innovation and eco-friendly ship technology development, and is forming the world's largest fuel cell-based distributed power generation market. Korea, which aims to commercialize power generation using ammonia fuel by 2030, is positioned as a key market for Amoji's ammonia-based energy solutions.

◆ Conquering the Asia Pacific market through the establishment of a Korean branch located in Pangyo

Amoji’s Pangyo Korea office will be led by Dr. Stone Zhang, who oversees operations in the Asian region including Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Dr. Zhang has over 15 years of global experience in the marine and energy value chain, worked at DNV (Norwegian Register of Shipping) for 13 years, and holds an MBA from Rice University in the United States.

Dr. Jang said, “This entry into Korea comes at a very important time, and based on policy support from the Korean government such as CHPS and DEA, we plan to supply 2% of total electricity from hydrogen and ammonia by 2030.” He added, “We plan to develop innovative ammonia fuel solutions in distributed power generation and marine applications in cooperation with leading companies such as SK Innovation, HD Hyundai Infracore, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha.”

◆ Accelerate demonstration and commercialization of carbon-neutral ships

Amoji successfully demonstrated the world’s first carbon-neutral ammonia-powered marine vessel in September 2024 and recently announced $56 million in venture funding to commercialize its solution to decarbonize the global shipping and power generation markets.
