Upstage announced on the 3rd that it signed a 'Media AI Joint Development Agreement' with the Chosun Ilbo and plans to develop and commercialize media-specific generative AI services targeting media companies and related fields.
This agreement is drawing attention as the first case of a domestic AI company and a media company jointly developing media-specific AI, following overseas collaborations with OpenAI and Time magazine. Through this collaboration, Chosun Ilbo plans to introduce AI technology to all processes of newspaper and digital news production and service.
Upstage is developing a media-specific AI service based on its pre-trained large language model (LLM) ‘SOLAR’, and the Chosun Ilbo provides a massive model training data including 4.1 million articles spanning 105 years, 350,000 person databases, and English and Japanese articles.
The two companies plan to launch the 'Proofreading AI' service in the first half of this year as the first result of their collaboration. This service provides functions to correct typos with an accuracy of over 95% when you input a draft of an article or other text, improve sentence structure, or recommend words that fit the context. Proofreading AI will first be introduced to the Chosun Ilbo production system, and will be expanded into a commercial service in the future.
Additionally, the two companies plan to jointly develop AI services applicable to various media industries, such as article translation, RAG (Augmented Search Generation)-based data search, news fact checking, and article generation based on opening statements.
Kim Sung-hoon, CEO of Upstage, said, “The Chosun Ilbo’s data accumulated over 105 years is a treasure that cannot be found in any other competitors in terms of both volume and reliability,” and “The combination of Chosun Ilbo’s data and Upstage’s technology will give birth to a new concept AI service that will lead not only the domestic but also the global media market.”
