Ministry of SMEs and Startups holds meeting with small business owners and people ahead of Lunar New Year holiday

Minister Oh Young -joo of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) visited Taepyeong Traditional Market in Jung-gu, Daejeon on the 20th ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday to inspect the winter fire safety response situation and carefully take care of the livelihood issues of the market merchants through a meeting with them.

Following the meeting with the National Merchants Association on the 17th, Minister Oh immediately went on an on-site inspection of the livelihoods of market merchants to hear their voices on the ground, complaining about the difficulties in the people’s economy.

Daejeon Taepyeong Market is a market closely related to daily life, with large-scale apartments and houses surrounding it, and is actively promoting various businesses by establishing a merchant cooperative. It is also a market selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' cultural tourism promotion project, which is now in its second year.

At the meeting that day, Minister Oh Young-joo said, “I deeply sympathize with the difficulties faced by small business owners and traditional markets due to the prolonged sluggish domestic demand, and accordingly, the government is actively responding by announcing measures for the Lunar New Year holiday and mobilizing all available means to provide all-out support.”

He continued, “In order to ease the burden of perceived holiday shopping prices during the extended Lunar New Year holiday, we are holding a special discount and refund event for digital Onnuri gift certificates. In particular, the amount used at traditional markets (card, mobile, cash receipts) also receives a 40% income tax deduction benefit, so I hope you will promote it a lot on-site as well.”

In addition, Minister Oh Young-joo personally supervised the fire safety management situation at Taepyeong Traditional Market, and requested, “During the winter, there is a risk that even a small amount of carelessness can lead to a large fire, so please pay special attention to fire safety management as a surge in visitors to traditional markets is expected during the Lunar New Year holidays.”

Today, heads of organizations affiliated with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups located in Daejeon and Sejong also attended the market to encourage merchants and participate in a shopping event to stimulate consumption.

Next, Minister Oh visited the social welfare facility 'Hosaenghakwon (Director Kim Young-hwa)' located in Jung-gu, Daejeon, which has maintained a relationship with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups for over 10 years, and delivered a condolence gift collected by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups employees along with various fruits, livestock products, rice cakes, etc. that they personally purchased at Taepyeong Traditional Market, and encouraged the staff at the facility.

Lastly, Minister Oh visited the Korean restaurant “Hoho Bapsang (CEO Lee Myeong-seong)” located in Jung-gu, Daejeon, which was successfully re-established through the Hope Return Package support project of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, again after August of last year, and shared various stories and encouragement about the difficulties and policy areas for improvement since the revival.

Minister Oh Young-joo said, “The Ministry of SMEs and Startups will do its best to ensure that our small business owners and traditional markets, who are at the center of domestic demand recovery, can have a warm and bountiful Lunar New Year holiday, and I hope that merchants will also actively participate.”
