SOS Lab Signs LiDAR Agreement with Dongwoon Anatech

SOS Lab, a leading LiDAR company, announced on the 24th that it has received an order for LiDAR for port cranes from Dongwoon Anatech. SOS Lab plans to supply its fixed LiDAR product 'ML-X' to Dongwoon Anatech, and Dongwoon Anatech plans to target the port market by mounting an ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) on the supplied LiDAR.

SOS Lab and Dongwoon Anatech have been continuing their collaboration since signing a strategic business agreement (MOU) for joint development of autonomous driving and industrial lidar technology in 2021. SOS Lab has been in charge of lidar sensor development, and Dongwoon Anatech has been in charge of ASIC design.

While the two companies are focusing on developing lidar for autonomous vehicles, they are also developing industrial lidar products that are expected to be commercialized quickly. This supply contract is part of an industrial lidar development project, and the two companies plan to develop a lidar solution specialized for container port cranes.

Major ports around the world, including Korea, are working to build unmanned automated port systems using IT technology. In particular, LiDAR is considered an essential element in building unmanned automated systems for building smart ports.

Port cranes require accurate object recognition capabilities because they must transport irregular products of different sizes and packaging types. Lidar can efficiently handle various cargoes with accurate object recognition technology, so the industry is paying attention to technological advancements through the introduction of Lidar.

According to the industry, the global port automation equipment market size is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6.4% from approximately USD 3.8 billion in 2019 to approximately USD 5.7 billion (KRW 8 trillion) in 2027.

An SOS Lab official emphasized, “This supply contract will be an opportunity to accelerate the introduction of LiDAR in the smart port market,” and “We expect that it will be possible to expand into various industries where cranes are utilized, such as shipbuilding and construction in the future.”

He added, “Based on close cooperation, SOS Lab and Dongwoon Anatech will focus on developing innovative lidar solutions that can be used in various industries and plan to further strengthen their competitiveness in the global market.”
