The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) announced on the 23rd that it held a kickoff meeting of the 'SME Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy Advisory Group' (hereinafter referred to as the Policy Advisory Group) at the Gwanghwamun Building in Seoul to promote the use and expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) in SMEs.
This policy advisory group was formed to identify policy tasks for the introduction and use of artificial intelligence technology by small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners, and to prepare the ‘Act on Promotion of AI Utilization and Diffusion by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (tentative name)’ as the basis for policy promotion, amid accelerating efforts to support artificial intelligence at the government-wide level, including the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Committee last September and the enactment of the Framework Act on AI in December.
Currently, AI is reducing the time and cost of technology development and acting as an engine that creates innovative results, so whether it is adopted in the future is directly related to corporate competitiveness. However, many small and medium-sized enterprises are still adopting and utilizing it at a low rate due to lack of information on adoption methods, uncertainty about whether AI adoption and investment will lead to future profits, etc.
The kickoff meeting on this day was held in the following order: awarding letters of appointment to 11 policy advisory board members comprised of industry, academia, and research experts in the field of artificial intelligence, announcing the operation plan, listening to the opinions of the policy advisory board, and discussing them.
The policy advisory group plans to propose policy tasks and tasks for drafting legislation for the use and expansion of artificial intelligence in small and medium-sized enterprises through various discussions, including regulations and response measures related to small and medium-sized enterprises under the Basic Act on AI passed in December of last year, key government support tasks, benchmarking of excellent overseas artificial intelligence policies, and securing and sharing learning data.
In addition, we plan to collect and supplement opinions from the industry on the status of AI adoption by SMEs and small business owners, difficulties in utilizing it, and identified policy tasks, targeting SME-related organizations and groups.
Based on the results of the discussion, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to derive the core contents of the '(tentative name) Act on Promotion of AI Utilization and Diffusion in Small and Medium Enterprises', which will serve as the basis for promoting policies and major policy tasks in each field for the utilization and diffusion of artificial intelligence in small and medium enterprises, such as computing power and other infrastructure, securing high-quality learning data, funding, and professional manpower.
Minister Oh Young-joo said, “AI is a game changer that will lead innovation and change in all areas, and the main entities introducing and utilizing AI technology are small and medium-sized enterprises.” He added, “The small and medium-sized enterprise AI policy and the ‘(tentative name) Act on Promotion of AI Utilization and Diffusion by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises’ that will be established through the operation of the SME AI Advisory Group and roundtable are expected to be an important opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises to respond to future technological and environmental changes and promote innovative growth, thereby contributing to the national economy.”
