Horong Co., Ltd. , a specialized construction equipment/specialty equipment company, announced on the 15th that it had been selected as the main research institute for the national project 'Development of Robot Platform and XR-based Human-Robot Collaboration Technology for Multipurpose Aerial Work at Construction Sites' hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and had completed a research and development agreement.
This national project is a large-scale project led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, with the participation of eight research institutes, including the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, Hanyang University, Korea University of Technology and Education, and Seoul National University of Science and Technology, and will be implemented at a total cost of 13.78 billion won. The project period will be from April 1, 2025 to December 31, 2029, for a total of 4 years and 9 months.
Through this national project, Horong develops a construction robot platform for high-altitude work. The robot system and integrated operation system for three types of high-altitude work (welding, painting, and refractory spraying) that enable human-robot remote collaboration based on extended reality (XR) contribute to the advancement of autonomy and remote control technology of construction robots, supporting precise work performance even in irregular work environments.
The main development contents include ▲design of a dual-arm robot system capable of autonomous movement and aerial work at construction sites ▲design and production of a prototype of a multipurpose autonomous driving robot platform and a dual-arm robot ▲optimization of the hydraulic and electrical systems of the prototype’s drive and lift modules ▲enhancement of the autonomous driving system through development of a high-output actuator module and control algorithm.
The aerial work robot technology development project is a project to secure the safety of workers at high-risk construction sites and implement a new construction method based on human-robot collaboration. Horong plans to simultaneously secure technological advancement and on-site applicability through the development of XR-based remote control technology, autonomous movement platforms, and collaborative control interfaces.
The global construction robot market is growing rapidly due to labor shortages and increasing safety demands, and the demand for automation is rapidly increasing, especially in the field of high-altitude work due to high risks. The domestic construction industry is also showing increasing interest in construction automation technology due to the aging population and lack of skilled workers.
A Horong official said, “This selection for a national project is an official recognition from a public institution of our future special vehicle technology and robot fusion capabilities,” and added, “We will make every effort to secure core technologies that can realize automation and smartening of high-risk construction work.”
