IDtech startup Hoppae (CEO Jaehoon Shim) announced on the 18th that it will participate as a joint research institute in the 'Development of standards for providing interoperability and interoperability of digital identity wallets' project as part of the 'Information and Communication Broadcasting Standard Development Support Project' supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP). The project is hosted by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and the Financial Security Institute and Hoppae are jointly participating.
The project will be carried out for five years from April 2025 to December 2029, and the core goal is to develop a standard framework to ensure interoperability between digital identity systems. The main contents consist of ▲establishing a standard technology framework for digital identity wallets ▲ensuring technical compatibility with global standards ▲developing open source-based linkage technology ▲promoting industry-specific verification projects, etc.
Digital identity wallets are increasingly being introduced by governments and companies around the world as a means of authentication that can store and optionally present identity and qualification information such as resident registration cards, driver's licenses, and health insurance cards in digital form. However, international standardization and technology integration are emerging as major challenges due to limited interoperability between national systems.
Through this project, participating organizations will develop a domestic standard framework that takes into account technical compatibility with major global standards such as the EUDI Wallet ARF and the ISO/IEC Mobile Driver's License Standard (18013-5/7) of the European Union (EU). In addition, they plan to verify effectiveness by promoting practical applications in various industries such as finance, travel, and public services.
“The core of digital identity wallets is interoperability between systems and international compatibility,” said Hopae CEO Shim Jae-hoon. “We hope that this project will be an opportunity for Korea to leap forward as a global standardization leader in the field of digital identity technology.”
Jeon Jin-yeong, CEO of Hopae, said, “Korea is a country with excellent e-government infrastructure in the world, and now is the time to lay the foundation for overseas expansion through contributions to global standards and the open source ecosystem.”
