Kuntec Signs Joint Research Agreement on Ship Cybersecurity with Korea Maritime and Ocean University and the Korea Internet & Security Agency

DX convergence security specialist Kuntec (CEO Bang Hyuk-jun) announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and Korea Maritime and Ocean University on July 30th at Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Yeongdo-gu, Busan for ‘Ship Cyber Intrusion Response Technology Research.’

This agreement was signed to implement the "Development of Core Security Technologies for Compliance with International Regulations for Smart Ships," a project promoted as part of the "Information Security Core Source Technology Development Project," supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and organized by the Institute for Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP). Key provisions of the agreement include: joint use of Korea Maritime and Ocean University's training vessels and testbeds; collection, generation, and sharing of ship security-related data; and cooperation in cybersecurity threat research and response technologies.

Through this project, Kuntec is focusing on establishing a cyber resilience model for smart ships and developing a platform to manage resilience procedures based on this model. Specifically, the company aims to secure technology for detecting vulnerabilities in ship equipment and monitoring internal and external networks. Through this, the company aims to strengthen its technological competitiveness in the global smart ship security market.

In this agreement, Korea Maritime and Ocean University will provide the Hanbada, a training vessel equipped with systems identical to those of an actual merchant ship, as a testbed. Professor Ahn Young-joong of Korea Maritime and Ocean University stated, "Due to the digitalization of modern ships, cyber threats can lead to real-world accidents. The Hanbada has the infrastructure necessary for testing that reflects real-world conditions."

Professor Yoon Kyung-kook of Korea Maritime and Ocean University stated, “Understanding the OT (Operational Technology) system is key to ship security, and we will support the development of world-class resilience technologies by linking digital twin-based simulations with empirical data.”

Kuntec CEO Bang Hyuk-jun said, “Collaboration between the public, private, and academic sectors is essential to respond to security threats in the maritime industry, where digital transformation is underway,” and added, “Kuntec will actively contribute to joint research to ensure the security of smart ships based on its technological prowess in OT/ICS security and threat detection.”
