Rainbow Research Institute, along with Daegu City and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), has been selected for the 'AI Cluster Drone Research and Development (R&D) Project for Early Emergency Response to Large-Scale Forest Fires' hosted by the Korea Forest Service, and will begin full-scale technology development and verification in August.
This project, which will receive 4 billion won in national funds, is intended to respond to large-scale forest fires that have emerged as serious disasters. In particular, this year's large-scale forest fires in Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Gyeongnam regions served as a catalyst, and was reflected in the emergency supplementary budget for disaster research and development (R&D).
The main organization is the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and representative local drone companies such as Rainbow Research Institute Co., Ltd. and Griffon Dynamics Co., Ltd., as well as Heliocen and Boltline are participating. Daegu City is supporting the entire verification process for project execution, including selection of verification areas and linking with participating organizations.
Rainbow Lab is a leading AI-based unmanned vehicle (drones, robots, etc.) solution provider. Through its arion platform, the company provides autonomous flight (operation), data processing, and integrated control services for drones and robots. Specifically, based on on-device AI mission computers for advanced unmanned vehicle operations and software platform technologies for remote, non-line-of-sight operation and autonomous mission execution, the company develops specialized drones for diverse industries, including defense, smart cities, and logistics. Furthermore, the company supports the intelligent and autonomous operation of unmanned vehicles for various organizations, groups, and companies.
Griffon Dynamics Co., Ltd. is a company that manufactures industrial drones using purely domestic technology. It plans to develop a large-scale swarm drone capable of carrying a fire extinguishing device weighing over 100 kg by utilizing its high-strength airframe development technology.
A total of 4 billion won in national funds will be invested in the project, and commercialization will be promoted through technology development and verification for approximately 1 year and 6 months until 2026, centered around Dalseong County.
Choi Woon-baek, head of the Future Innovation Growth Office of Daegu Metropolitan City, said, “The drone industry is a future industry that will be utilized in various fields such as logistics, military, and facilities,” and added, “We will continue to work to foster local specialized companies by securing national R&D projects so that Daegu City can become a leader in the future aviation industry.”
