The Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education held its 22nd International Symposium.

The Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education (Director Samhwa Kim) under the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that it will hold the '22nd International Symposium' at 2:00 PM on August 5th at the Ferrum Hall on the 3rd floor of the Ferrum Tower in Seoul.

This symposium, a preliminary side event for the APEC Women's Economic Dialogue scheduled for August 12th, will be attended by domestic and international experts on gender equality, in conjunction with the inaugural APEC Policy Partnership on Women in the Economy (PPWE) in 2025. Under the theme of "Sustainable Development and Women's Economic Participation," the symposium will share diverse case studies and discuss effective policy directions and cooperation strategies.

At the symposium, Cecilia Tinonin, a statistician at the UN Women Asia-Pacific Regional Office, will present on "Current Status and Challenges of Women's Economic Participation in APEC Member Countries," Osa Torkelson, Director of the UN Population Fund Seoul Office, will present on "Supporting Sustainable Women's Economic Participation Policies," and Professor Yuko Itatsu of the University of Tokyo will present on "Digital Transformation and Strengthening Women's Economic Capacity." Following this, Park Seon-young, Director of the Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education, and Shin Hyeon-ok, Director of the Central Women's New Job Support Center, will introduce "Efforts and Achievements to Promote Women's Economic Activity in Korea."

After the presentation, Kyobo Life Insurance's External Cooperation Director, Heo Geum-ju, will moderate the discussion, and Professor Lim So-yeon of Dong-a University, Professor Kim Sang-jun of Ewha Womans University, and Professor Won Byeong-muk of Sungkyunkwan University will participate.

President Kim Sam-hwa said, “Equal economic participation by men and women is essential for sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, efforts are needed to strengthen women’s capabilities in STEM and digital technology amidst the digital transformation and proliferation of AI,” adding, “We will continue to strive to spread a culture of gender equality.”

Through this symposium, the Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education plans to increase domestic and international understanding and interest in the APEC Women's Economic Forum and strengthen its role as a global hub for sharing and disseminating knowledge on gender equality.
