On the 6th, the Daegu Center for Creative Economy and Innovation (hereinafter referred to as the Daegu Center) held a 'Regional OI Meeting and Networking' event at the Samsung C-Lab Outside on the 2nd floor of the Daegu Center to explore ways to activate regional open innovation. The event was attended by large, medium, and public enterprises (demand companies) and startups that are pursuing collaboration with the Center for Creative Economy and Innovation.
The event was held as part of the public-private partnership open innovation support project, overseen by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and managed by the Korea Institute of Startups and Entrepreneurship Development, to support shared growth through collaboration between companies in demand and startups. The Daegu Center participated as the only local organization to host the project, operating a regional cluster/free economic zone-linked program together with the Regional Creative Economy Innovation Center (Regional Center).
In this program, five regional centers in Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam, Chungnam, Chungbuk, and Daegu participate as cooperative organizations that link open innovation, supporting collaboration between nine demand companies and nine startups each. This event was organized to discuss ways to activate such regional open innovation and create successful collaboration results.
The event, attended by a total of 52 people (10 related organizations, 9 demand companies, and 9 start-ups), was divided into two parts: Part 1, a discussion meeting, and Part 2, a networking session. Part 1 was a regional center meeting to establish measures to activate regional open innovation, and Part 2 included lectures and discussions on current status sharing and operational strategies for creating collaborative outcomes.
In the first part of the meeting, the five regional centers of Gyeonggi, Gyeongnam, Seoul, Chungnam, and Daegu, which are the main and cooperating organizations of this project, participated and shared cases of organizing and supporting collaboration between demand companies and startups in the region. They also discussed practical perspectives on policy measures to promote open innovation in the region in the future.
The second part of the networking program introduced the current status of clusters and free economic zones, as well as the open innovation programs of regional centers. Lee Seon-mi, Managing Director of Y&Archer, presented on the topic of "Open Innovation: Now and Next," introducing trends in open innovation operations and future strategic directions.
Next, the three companies participating in this project, SK Ecoplant, Korea Gas Corporation, and Korea Aerospace Industries, shared the current status and future direction of the projects they are pursuing with startups. Then, through a panel discussion, in-depth discussions were held on the necessity, pros and cons, difficulties, and improvement plans for open innovation from the perspective of demand companies.
Pattern & CEO Nam Jae-ryong, who participated in the event that day, said, “This was an event where we expect that open innovation will be activated through the will of regional centers and demand companies, and that more collaboration opportunities will be created for local startups.” He also said that the Daegu Center plans to further advance its business based on the development opinions discussed that day.
Daegu Center CEO Han In-guk said, “Through this event, we were able to identify pressing issues of cooperation between the three entities: regional creative economy innovation centers, demand companies, and startups.” He added, “We will continue to expand discussions to enhance our policy capabilities so that the regional centers’ innovation brokering activities can lead to regional innovation in the future.”
