SLW Lab concludes its "Living Lab Workshop for the Development of a Historical and Cultural District in the Seolleung Royal Tomb Area."

SL W Lab Co., Ltd. (CEO Yong-seok Lee) announced on the 12th that it has completed a citizen participation living lab workshop conducted as part of the ‘Seonjeongneung Historical and Cultural Specialized Street Creation Project’ being promoted by Gangnam-gu Office.

Living Labs are a participatory policy planning method where citizens directly identify problems in their daily lives and collaborate with various stakeholders to develop practical solutions. S.L.W. Lab ran this workshop based on its experience winning the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award in 2024 for its Living Lab project utilizing public data.

The Seolleung Royal Tomb History and Culture Specialization Street Development Project leverages the historic significance of Seolleung Royal Tomb and its surrounding spatial resources to create a neighborhood where residents and visitors will want to linger. This workshop was a participatory program, allowing residents to define issues and propose improvement ideas based on their experiences and perspectives on the space.

The first workshop involved conducting in-depth interviews to capture diverse perspectives from residents and stakeholders, sharing these insights and broadening the scope of the discussion. Under the theme, "How do I view the value of Seolleung?", participants reflected on their personal perceptions and social significance, and prioritized resources through group discussions. This process confirmed that citizen input could be reflected in Gangnam-gu's public design goals.

The second workshop focused on developing practical ideas applicable to real-world spatial improvements, building on the problems and solutions identified in the first workshop. Using idea cards, the workshop discussed improvement directions and supplementary ideas based on various design examples. The workshop focused on feasibility and sustainability, preservation of ecological value, and ways to convey historical significance.

Workshop participants commented, “The process of thinking about spatial meaning together was meaningful, and the exchange of diverse opinions and the generation of effective ideas were impressive.”

SLW Lab CEO Lee Yong-seok said, “This workshop was very meaningful as it dealt with Seolleung, the largest historical and cultural resource in the city, and the active participation of local governments and residents made practical discussions possible.” He added, “We will continue to operate the Living Lab so that citizens can proactively discuss local issues and lead to public change.”
