The Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education signed a business agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Council.

The Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education (President Kim Sam-hwa), under the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, announced on September 3rd that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Seoul Metropolitan Council (Chairperson Choi Ho-jeong) on September 2nd to promote a culture of gender equality and strengthen gender-responsive policy capabilities. The signing ceremony took place at the Seoul Metropolitan Council.

This agreement aims to establish a cooperative framework between the two organizations to jointly promote a culture of gender equality and strengthen the policy foundation. Key areas of cooperation include: raising awareness of gender equality and providing violence prevention education; gender awareness training and improving organizational culture; identifying female talent and enhancing their representation; promoting gender equality issues to the public; and promoting mutual support and exchange.

Through this agreement, the Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education plans to provide customized gender awareness training for local council members to the Seoul Metropolitan Council and continue to provide professional support to integrate a gender awareness perspective into all legislative activities.

Kim Sam-hwa, director of the Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education, said, “Local councils that reflect a gender perspective play an important role in embracing the lives of citizens,” and added, “Through this agreement, we will contribute to substantially enhancing the policy capabilities of council members based on the institute’s educational content.”

Seoul Metropolitan Council Speaker Choi Ho-jeong said, “Gender equality is a core value for creating a safe and happy society for all,” and added, “I hope this agreement will serve as an opportunity for gender equality to become naturally established in the organizational culture of the Seoul Metropolitan Council.”

Meanwhile, the Korea Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education, a specialized organization established pursuant to Article 46 of the Framework Act on Gender Equality, is promoting the systematic expansion of gender equality education, including gender sensitivity training for public sector workers and the development of job-tailored educational content.

The Seoul Metropolitan Council elected its first female chairperson since its opening last year, and is recognized as a model example of a gender-equal local council, with the percentage of female managers at Grade 5 or higher at 37.6%, exceeding the national average of 34.7% for local councils.
