Vincen Co., Ltd. (CEO Chil-Hwan Lee), a company specializing in eco-friendly fuel cells and battery propulsion systems for ships, announced on the 15th that it has received type approval for a 150kW marine fuel cell module from the Italian classification society RINA.
This type approval is a key technological milestone for the verification and commercialization of a 250kW marine fuel cell system equipped with two 150kW fuel cell modules, and is considered an achievement that strengthens Vincen's technological credibility in the global eco-friendly ship market.
Beginning with type approval for a 60kW fuel cell stack in March of this year, Vincen has subsequently secured NTQ approval from the Korean Register (KR) and certification from the Korea Maritime Safety Corporation (KOMSA) for its 100kW fuel cell, demonstrating its technological prowess. Building on this 150kW type approval, Vincen is actively pursuing international classification society certification for its 250kW marine fuel cell system, targeting certification in the first half of 2026.
Vincen is also accelerating the development of a megawatt-class, high-power fuel cell propulsion system based on a 250kW system. Using a modular design, the company is developing a hydrogen propulsion solution applicable to medium- to large-sized vessels, such as passenger ships and coastal cargo ships. This technology is attracting attention as a next-generation marine propulsion technology that ensures efficiency, safety, and operational sustainability amidst the strengthening of IMO environmental regulations and the shift to zero-emissions vessels.
Vincen CEO Lee Chil-hwan said, “The type approval of the 150kW fuel cell module is an indicator that Vincen’s proprietary fuel cell technology has reached the practical commercial stage in the global eco-friendly ship market.” He added, “Based on high-power systems in the 250kW and megawatt ranges, we will strengthen our role as Korea’s leading eco-friendly propulsion system company in the mid- to large-sized ship market.”
“Vincen’s fuel cell technology has proven its international safety standards and reliability,” said Enzo Di Capua, branch manager of RINA Korea and Japan, an Italian classification society. “High-output hydrogen propulsion/power systems will play a key role in the transition to eco-friendly ships, and RINA will also actively support its expansion into the global market.”
