MakinaRocks , an industry-specific AI company, announced that it has won a contract to develop an intelligent GOP operational support system based on a defense-specific AI platform. This project, funded by the Defense Innovation 100 program, has a total budget of approximately 4.4 billion won and a 35-month period, ending in October 2028.
In this project, MakinaRocks will serve as the lead company and conduct joint research and development with the National Defense University, the Korea Military Academy, and Inha University. The core of the project is to transform the existing human-centric GOP operational system into an AI-based, real-time decision-making support structure.
Currently, GOP operations are conducted by personnel directly assessing the status of troops and equipment and assessing response measures in the event of an emergency. This method requires time and has limited accuracy. In an environment of diminishing troop resources and troop reductions, the need for a structural shift has been consistently raised.
MakinaRocks plans to build a defense-specific AI platform, K-AIP, based on its proprietary AI platform, Runway. The platform is designed to securely collect and connect various forms of unstructured battlefield data, such as surveillance camera footage, radio transmissions, and situation report documents, and to rapidly apply the latest AI models suited to the defense environment.
On this platform, AI models will be developed to recognize battlefield situations and propose appropriate response measures. These models will be deployed in the field as an intelligent GOP operational support system application to assist commanders in real-time decision-making. This is expected to improve the efficiency of the operational process, from observation and judgment to decision-making and action.
Beyond improving the efficiency of GOP operations, this project is expected to lead to a shift in how AI technology is introduced and utilized in the defense sector. The goal is to establish a foundation for battlefield intelligence through continuous advancement of AI models and flexible field application.
Through this project, MakinaRocks plans to explore ways to expand its defense-specific AI platform into diverse operational environments, including border areas, urban areas, and unconventional warfare.
