Cowintech (CEO Jaehwan Lee and Gapyong Jeong), a leading company in smart factory automation systems, announced that it has signed a contract to supply a secondary battery electrode process automation system worth 32 billion won. Under this contract, Cowintech will supply the automation system on a turnkey basis to a global major battery company’s North American factory by December 2026.
The automation system being supplied this time will be applied to the production line for 46-pie (46mm in diameter) cylindrical batteries, which are considered the next-generation batteries. In addition to securing orders for the electrode process at the plant, Cowintech plans to sequentially secure orders for the assembly process and activation process.
The 46-pie (46mm diameter) cylindrical battery has the advantage of being able to be produced in a variety of battery heights from 80mm to 120mm, allowing for flexible production based on battery specifications. In addition, it can accommodate more active materials than existing cylindrical batteries, enabling higher energy output within the same volume, and due to its structural characteristics, it has a low possibility of thermal runaway, which is increasing the demand for 46-pie cylindrical batteries.
Cowintech announced that it plans to increase its growth momentum by taking the lead in the next-generation battery line market, as it has secured a competitive edge in receiving orders in the front-end process, focusing on transport robot products specialized in secondary battery mixing, electrode, and assembly processes.
A Cowintech official said, “Even amid the ongoing electric vehicle chasm and U.S. policy uncertainty, the most important thing across the battery industry is technological competitiveness,” adding, “In addition to logistics transport robots such as AGVs and AMRs, we are also developing an automation system that combines robots and AI. We plan to focus on expanding our portfolio to other industries in the future by leveraging our technological prowess.”
