Snowflake , a global AI data cloud company, announced plans to acquire Crunchy Data, an open source PostgreSQL (PostgreSQL) technology and service company.
With this acquisition, Snowflake will integrate CrunchData’s Postgres database directly into the Snowflake AI Data Cloud and launch ‘Snowflake Postgres’, available in private preview.
Snowflake Postgres enables users to build AI applications with AI-optimized, enterprise- and developer-friendly Postgres while maintaining FedRAMP compliance on the Snowflake AI Data Cloud.
Postgres is currently the most popular database among developers, with 49% of all developers using it. Snowflake Postgres is designed to support the entire life cycle of enterprise workloads, from deployment to operation, by leveraging CrunchData’s essential performance metrics, built-in extensibility features, and intuitive interface.
“Snowflake’s goal is to provide the most trusted and comprehensive data and AI platform, and this announcement once again validates Snowflake as the ultimate platform for your data and AI needs,” said Vivek Raghunathan, SVP of Engineering at Snowflake. “This acquisition reflects both the massive $350 billion market opportunity and real customer demand to run Postgres on the Snowflake AI Data Cloud.”
“CrunchData’s rigorous commitment to security and compliance has made us a trusted Postgres partner across highly regulated industries, including federal agencies, Fortune 500 financial institutions, and large SaaS companies,” said Paul Laurence, CrunchData co-founder. “Working with Snowflake will help customers who already run Postgres run their critical workloads with increased reliability and security on the Snowflake platform.”
Blue Yonder and Landing AI are two of the leading customers and partners leveraging Postgres to process operational data for their applications with Snowflake Postgres. “Bringing Postgres technology into the Snowflake ecosystem will empower our development teams and provide an opportunity to deliver faster, simpler benefits to our customers,” said Chris Burchett, SVP of Generative AI at Blue Yonder.
