Dolby Laboratories (Dolby), a leader in immersive entertainment experiences, announced on the 10th that it is significantly expanding its partnership with theater chain AMC Entertainment (AMC). As a result, 40 additional Dolby Cinema screens will open in AMC theaters in the United States from this year until the end of 2027.
This expanded partnership builds on the success of AMC Dolby Cinemas over the past decade and the immersive viewing experience that audiences have come to love. The additional Dolby Cinemas will increase the number of AMC Dolby Cinemas in the U.S. by approximately 25 percent, bringing the total to over 200. This is another important milestone for AMC as we continue to invest in innovative technology and deliver the ultimate premium experience to moviegoers.
As the preference for premium theaters such as Dolby Cinema has increased recently, the proportion of premium theaters in total box office revenue is increasing. With Dolby establishing itself as a valuable brand among moviegoers, Dolby Cinema achieved the highest attendance ever in 2024, breaking the box office revenue record of 2023.
A key factor in making this achievement possible is Dolby’s robust content lineup. More than 725 theatrical films have been released or are scheduled to be released in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to date, including new and upcoming releases such as Mission Impossible – Final Reckoning, The Karate Kid 2, F1, Jurassic World: Legacy, and Avatar: Fire and Ashes. In addition, 49 of the top 50 box office films of the past five years were screened in Dolby Cinema.
Dolby Cinema is Dolby’s flagship screening solution for both the theater industry and moviegoers, providing a more in-depth moviegoing experience with the vivid picture quality of Dolby Vision® and the immersive sound of Dolby Atmos® in a theater environment comprehensively designed by Dolby, from seating arrangements to acoustic design. With this expanded partnership, AMC and Dolby plan to expand their efforts to strengthen existing Dolby Cinema operations. In addition, AMC has adopted Dolby Vision as the HDR solution introduced at AMC in addition to opening new Dolby Cinema theaters.
“Premium theaters provide a unique and distinctive cinema experience that is redefining the standard for moviegoers today,” said Kevin Yeaman, president and CEO, Dolby Laboratories. “We look forward to expanding our long-standing partnership with AMC to provide even more audiences with the opportunity to enjoy the immersive moviegoing experience that is only possible in a Dolby Cinema.”
“For the past decade, AMC and Dolby have provided moviegoers with compelling moviegoing experiences – especially when it comes to scale, picture quality, sound and immersion for big-budget blockbusters,” said Adam Aron, chairman and CEO of AMC Entertainment. “This expanded partnership underscores AMC’s relentless commitment to bringing the premium experiences our filmmakers, studio partners and audiences demand to more AMC theaters and audiences across America.”
