[Korea’s Founder @Work] AdbyMe – Kim Jae-hong

Since posting the first ‘Korea’s Founders @Work’ many people have asked me to introduce their business the same way.

More than 20 startups have asked me, but I had to turn down most of them. Not that they are lacking in taste, but I would like to find them myself. Mainly, I want to write about startup companies that are currently providing useful services and their founders. So in some way, I want to keep the “Korea’s Founders @Work” series private.

I have my own guidelines for selecting a startup company and its founders, and that is that their idea has to make me shout out, “Why haven’t I thought of that idea?” Korea’s Founders @Work second edition is about AdbyMe’s CEO Jae Hong Kim who also has brilliant ideas that have made me think “Why didn’t I think of that?”.

On June 18th, 2003 Google launched AdSense which stirred up the online ad market. CEO Jae Hong Kim quickly learned about online market trends and mixed these ideas with social media to create a unique and successful service.

1. What is AdbyMe?
AdbyMe is literally ‘ad by me’. The service could be defined as a “user involved social ad platform”. Users choose products they want to make an ad for, and then they become the copywriter themselves using their social network to deliver the message. Then, if someone clicks on that ad they get paid for each click.

2. In the U.S there is a service called Ad.ly, is it similar to AdbyMe? If not, what is the difference?
Ad.ly is not really open to all users out there and only allows users with many followers or celebrities to participate. AdbyMe gives all users that have social network services the chance to become a copywriter.

3. How did you start this business?
Last year I witnessed that Facebook and Twitter’s traffic had exceeded Google’s. Google AdSense is used on blogs but I thought it was a problem for them that they did not have an advertising model for social networks. Additionally, since people have an aversion to existing internet ads such as banners and popup ads, we came up with a user based internet ad model.

4. Were there any problems or other experiences when starting out?
When we were preparing for the open beta, we got nine ads to sell. At the time we thought it would last about two to three weeks.  However, we underestimated power of social networks. 7 out of 9 ads sold out in one day and so in order to gain more clients, even our developing engineers were out doing sales pitches.

5. Were there really users that earned $750
in one day by making an ad? Can you confirm this?
AdbyMe offers a way for users to earn profit, irrespective of how many followers they may or may not have. It does not happen often, but indeed there was one user that made $750 in one day and consequently made it to the news.

6. Isn’t it risky that your business model depends so much on Twitter?
We believe Twitter is the most active and user friendly social media network for ads and that is why we are using it as our primary platform. We try to hold ourselves up as a company by offering users the opportunity to become good copywriters through AdbyMe’s system. We also welcome all other social media platforms such as Facebook.

7. Is it true that AdbyMe is already working on global services?
From the initial stages, AdbyMe has been trying to provide a global standard by starting a US service. Our goal is to launch a multi-lingual system over one platform with plans to add three more languages. The U.S have a lot more social media users and hence the social ad market is growing rapidly. I am very excited to see how AdbyMe will be perceived by users compared to related services like Ad.ly. We are planning to expand to the Asian market as well.

8. What’s it like to run a startup business in Korea?
I am really enjoying it. Korea has one of the best IT infrastructures meaning we can easily try new things and gain fast feedback. Our initial plan was to run the beta test in Korea and start the U.S service right away, but as we were running the beta service in Korea we received such great feedback that we decided to continue.

9. Is there any advice you can give to startup businesses using social networking platforms?
AdbyMe being a startup itself, I am not sure if I am the right person to give out advice at this stage but I am willing to share what I have learned so far.
1. It is impossible to balance perfectly when you sit on a bicycle, you have to push the pedals and balance out as you go. I believe startups are the same.
2. If you are afraid to go into the jungle, meet someone who has already been there.
3. It is people that create vision, not vice versa. Create a good team.

10. Can you give any advice to Korean startups trying to go global?
1. Set a global standard from the beginning and build your business upon it.
2. Do not fight for bigger stakes in the local market. It is better to collaborate with a good partner.
3. Set your priority as global expansion.

AdbyMe recently received a 500,000,000won investment from Stonebridge Capital (approx. US$430,000) and plan to enter foreign markets including Japan and the U.S in the near future.
