Put the creative in creative economy In the last few years we’ve heard frequently about the Korean government’s efforts to find the recipe for ‘creative economy’. I wrote several times about how much I agree with the ‘creative economy’ strategy (although I don’t always agree with the tactical actions taken to get there).

The question on everyone’s minds is: what is the right recipe? Here’s the problem: you can find a recipe for Gordon Ramsey’s famous dishes on the Internet. But if you try to make those same dishes in your kitchen, they will not come out as well as they do when he makes them.

A recipe is the list of all the ingredients, and the process used to put them together to make the final result. That’s the theory. But anyone who ever tried to follow a recipe knows that’s not true. If we wanted to completely rationalize it, we can blame the over that is not exact in its temperature; we can blame the flour for being different than the one in Italy; we can say the water tastes slightly different; the tomatoes are not as sweet; the experienced chef has a better mixing, chopping or frying techniques.

But all these explanations are irrelevant: Gordon Ramsey will always make a “Beef Wellington” better than any amateur cook, even if the amateur tries to follow his technique, ingredients and cooking style to the letter. The truth about following a recipe is that not only will your results be very far from the target, but they will actually be slightly different every time you yourself make it.

Using the same ingredients, over, cooking material and recipe will still yield different results. There is something you add yourself, as the chef in charge, that cannot be accounted for in the dry text of the recipe.

Building a startup using a startup recipe will fail just like trying to cook from a Gordon Ramsey recipe. You can’t be as successful as Chef Ramsey on your first try, and likewise you can’t be Bill Gates on your first try either. What you can do, is to try and follow what expert chefs do to be this good.

If you wanted to be a great chef, how would you do that? First, you can train with other chefs. This is excellent advice for a startup, too, if you can do it. Japanese Sushi chefs spend many years as helpers, then assistant-chefs until finally – sometimes 20 or 30 years later – they have a chance to be their own chefs.

Likewise, being a team member in other startups will help you build experience, see what other startup founders do well and notice their mistake (which you hopefully will not repeat when it’s your turn). Even being a junior in a startup is valuable experience.

Being an early team member is even better; it’s like sitting next to the driver’s sit. You don’t have any of the responsibility but you have a perfect view of the road, and the person driving. You get to see the decisions up close, and decide what is it you would have done differently.

This is great experience for when you are the one in the driver’s sit. Another way to become a great chef (and a great startup founder) is to just try. But keep in mind, what any great chef will tell you – if you keep trying the same things, you will never achieve greatness.

Experimenting, changing the process and ingredients and constantly trying again and again are the path to success in the kitchen, and in the startup world. Putting in spices, trying different approaches, and mainly: ruining many dishes many times.

That’s the only way to be really great. With a startup, it’s ok to have a recipe in the drawer, to try and follow some general guidelines. But don’t be afraid to experiment, try different things, stray off the common advice and be prepare for many small failures until your dish finally comes out tasty. Maybe it will even come out legendary!
