업스테이지(대표 김성훈)는 과학기술정보통신부가 추진하는 ‘독자 AI 파운데이션 모델 개발 사업’의 최종 수행 기관으로 선정됐다고 4일 밝혔다. 업스테이지는 이번 사업에서 총 15개 지원 팀 중 서류 및 발표 평가를 거쳐 선발된 정예 5개 팀에 이름을 올렸으며, 스타트업으로는 유일하게 선정돼 기술력과 성장성을 인정받았다.
업스테이지는 독자 AI 모델을 신규 개발하는 ‘유형 1’ 과제에 참여하며, 자체 아키텍처와 학습 알고리즘을 설계·구현해 글로벌 수준의 프런티어 모델 개발에 나설 계획이다. 모델 규모는 1,000억~3,000억 파라미터 수준이며, 한국어·영어·일본어·동남아 언어 등 다국어 지원과 함께 멀티모달, 산업 특화 기능도 순차적으로 확장할 예정이다.
이번 과제를 위해 업스테이지는 산·학·연 컨소시엄을 구성했다. 산업계에서는 래블업(GPU 가상화), 노타 AI(모델 학습 최적화), 플리토(데이터 전처리 및 평가)가 협력하며, 학계에서는 카이스트와 서강대 소속 연구진이 참여해 연구 성과 창출과 인재 양성에 기여한다.
또한 업스테이지는 이번에 개발할 파운데이션 모델을 다양한 산업 분야에 적용하기 위해 의료(뷰노), 제조·국방(마키나락스), 법률(로앤컴퍼니), 공공(오케스트로), 교육(데이원컴퍼니), 글로벌 검색(올거나이즈), 금융 인프라(금융결제원) 등과의 협업을 추진할 예정이다.
업스테이지 김성훈 대표는 “이번 과제를 통해 기술적 독립성과 글로벌 경쟁력을 확보하고, 국내 AI 산업 전반의 혁신과 생태계 확대에 기여하겠다”고 밝혔다.

Upstage Selected as the Executor for the "Independent AI Foundation Model Development Project."
Upstage (CEO Kim Seong-hun) announced on the 4th that it has been selected as the final implementation organization for the "Independent AI Foundation Model Development Project," promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT. Upstage was one of the five elite teams selected through document and presentation evaluations out of 15 applicants for this project. As the only startup selected, it was recognized for its technological prowess and growth potential.
Upstage will participate in a "Type 1" project to develop a new proprietary AI model. The company plans to design and implement its own architecture and learning algorithms to develop a global-class frontier model. The model will be sized between 100 billion and 300 billion parameters, and will support multiple languages, including Korean, English, Japanese, and Southeast Asian languages. Multimodal and industry-specific features will also be sequentially expanded.
For this project, Upstage formed a consortium of industry, academia, and research. Industry partners include Lablup (GPU virtualization), Nota AI (model learning optimization), and Pluto (data preprocessing and evaluation). Researchers from KAIST and Sogang University will also participate in the academic effort, contributing to research achievements and talent development.
Upstage also plans to collaborate with various industries, including medical (Viewno), manufacturing and defense (Machinalax), legal (Law & Company), public (Orchestro), education (Day One Company), global search (Organize), and financial infrastructure (Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute), to apply the foundation model to various industries.
Upstage CEO Kim Seong-hun stated, “Through this project, we will secure technological independence and global competitiveness, and contribute to innovation and ecosystem expansion across the domestic AI industry.”

アップステージは独自のAIモデルを新規開発する「タイプ1」課題に参加し、独自のアーキテクチャと学習アルゴリズムを設計・実装し、グローバルレベルのフロンティアモデル開発に乗り出す計画だ。モデル規模は1,000億～3,000億のパラメータ水準であり、韓国語・英語・日本語・東南アジア言語など多言語支援とともにマルチモーダル、産業特化機能も順次拡張する予定だ。
今回の課題のため、アップステージは産・学・研コンソーシアムを構成した。産業界ではラブアップ（GPU仮想化）、能田AI（モデル学習最適化）、プリト（データ前処理および評価）が協力し、学界ではカイストと西江大学所属の研究者が参加して研究成果創出と人材養成に寄与する。
また、アップステージは今回開発するファンデーションモデルを多様な産業分野に適用するため、医療（ビューノ）、製造・国防（マキナラックス）、法律（ローアンカンパニー）、公共（オーケストロ）、教育（デイワンカンパニー）、グローバル検索（オールガイズ）、金融インフラ（金融決済院）などとの協業。

Upstage (PDG Kim Seong-hun) a annoncé le 4 janvier avoir été sélectionnée comme organisation de mise en œuvre finale du « Projet indépendant de développement du modèle de fondation de l'IA », promu par le ministère des Sciences et des TIC. Upstage figurait parmi les cinq équipes d'élite sélectionnées après évaluation des documents et des présentations parmi les 15 candidats pour ce projet. Seule startup sélectionnée, elle a été reconnue pour ses prouesses technologiques et son potentiel de croissance.
Upstage participera à un projet de type 1 visant à développer un nouveau modèle d'IA propriétaire. L'entreprise prévoit de concevoir et de mettre en œuvre sa propre architecture et ses propres algorithmes d'apprentissage afin de développer un modèle frontalier de classe mondiale. Ce modèle comportera entre 100 et 300 milliards de paramètres et prendra en charge plusieurs langues, dont le coréen, l'anglais, le japonais et les langues d'Asie du Sud-Est. Les fonctionnalités multimodales et sectorielles seront également progressivement étendues.
Pour ce projet, Upstage a formé un consortium regroupant des acteurs de l'industrie, du monde universitaire et de la recherche. Parmi les partenaires industriels figurent Lablup (virtualisation GPU), Nota AI (optimisation de l'apprentissage des modèles) et Pluto (prétraitement et évaluation des données). Des chercheurs du KAIST et de l'Université Sogang participeront également à l'effort académique, contribuant ainsi aux avancées de la recherche et au développement des talents.
