탑머티리얼은 최근 미국 콜로라도주 덴버에 위치한 배터리 및 반도체 혁신 기술 기업 포지나노(Forge Nano)에 투자했다고 밝혔다. 이번 투자는 포지나노가 신규로 유치한 4천만 달러(USD) 규모의 투자금 중 일부로, 포지나노의 총 누적 투자금은 약 1억 4천만 달러(USD)를 넘어섰다.
포지나노는 ALD(Atomic Layer Deposition)라는 혁신적인 기술을 보유한 회사로, 양극 활물질 또는 실리콘 음극 활물질에 원자 수준의 표면 코팅을 함으로써 이차전지의 수명과 안전성을 획기적으로 개선시키는 기술을 개발하였다. 이 기술은 이차전지 외에도 반도체 웨이퍼, 제약 등 광범위한 분야에 적용 가능한 기술로 알려져 있다.
앞서 포지나노는 GM(제너럴 모터스)의 투자회사인 GM벤처스와 폭스바겐 등으로부터 대규모 투자를 유치하였으며, 미국 정부의 보조금을 확정하여 노스캐롤라이나에 3GWh 규모의 배터리셀 공장을 건설할 계획이다.
탑머티리얼은 이번 투자를 통해 양사 간의 협력관계를 구축해 나갈 계획이다. 특히 포지나노의 ALD 기술을 현재 탑머티리얼이 개발 중인 고전압 미드 니켈계와 망간계 양극재에 적용함으로써 성능을 한층 업그레이드시킬 계획이다.
탑머티리얼은 인산철 양극재 개발 완료 이후 평택 브레인시티에 생산라인을 구축하고 있으며, 최근에는 무전구체 공법을 사용한 고전압 미드 니켈계 개발에 역량을 집중하고 있다. 무전구체 공법을 적용한 고전압 미드 니켈계는 환경 친화적이고 가격 경쟁력과 안전성을 갖춘 차세대 양극재로 평가받고 있다. 또한 중국이 독점한 전구체를 사용하지 않아 보조금 및 관세 측면에서 절대적으로 유리한 공법이다.
탑머티리얼 관계자는 “포지나노의 ALD 표면 기술 적용을 통해 미드 니켈계 양극재의 고전압에서의 장수명을 확보할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다”며, “이번 투자를 계기로 포지나노의 기가팩토리 건설에 참여함으로써 조만간 대규모 시스템 엔지니어링 수주를 기대할 수 있을 것으로 예상한다”고 밝혔다.

Top Material Invests in US Possinano
Top Material recently announced that it has invested in Forge Nano, a battery and semiconductor innovation technology company located in Denver, Colorado, USA. This investment is part of Forge Nano’s new $40 million investment, bringing Forge Nano’s total accumulated investment to approximately $140 million.
PosiNano is a company with an innovative technology called ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition), and has developed a technology that dramatically improves the lifespan and safety of secondary batteries by applying surface coating on the atomic level to positive electrode active materials or silicon negative electrode active materials. This technology is known to be applicable to a wide range of fields, including semiconductor wafers and pharmaceuticals, in addition to secondary batteries.
Previously, PosiNano attracted large-scale investments from GM Ventures, an investment company of General Motors, and Volkswagen, and plans to build a 3GWh battery cell factory in North Carolina by securing subsidies from the U.S. government.
Top Material plans to build a cooperative relationship between the two companies through this investment. In particular, it plans to further upgrade performance by applying PosiNano’s ALD technology to the high-voltage mid-nickel and manganese cathode materials that Top Material is currently developing.
Top Material has been building a production line in Pyeongtaek Brain City since completing the development of iron phosphate cathode materials, and has recently been focusing its capabilities on the development of high-voltage mid-nickel using a precursor-free process. High-voltage mid-nickel using a precursor-free process is evaluated as a next-generation cathode material that is environmentally friendly, price-competitive, and safe. In addition, it is an absolutely advantageous process in terms of subsidies and tariffs because it does not use precursors monopolized by China.
A Top Material official said, “We expect to secure a long lifespan for mid-nickel cathode materials at high voltages by applying PosiNano’s ALD surface technology,” and “We expect to receive large-scale system engineering orders in the near future by participating in the construction of PosiNano’s gigafactory based on this investment.”

トップマテリアル関係者は「ポジナノのALD表面技術適用を通じてミッドニッケル系陽極材の高電圧での長寿命を確保できると期待される」とし、「今回の投資をきっかけにポジナノのギガファクトリー建設に参加することで、近いうちに大規模システムエンジニアリング受注を期待できる」と予想する。

De plus, c’est une méthode absolument avantageuse en termes de subventions et de tarifs car elle n’utilise pas de précurseurs monopolisés par la Chine.
Un responsable de Top Material a déclaré : « Nous espérons garantir une longue durée de vie aux matériaux de cathode à moyenne teneur en nickel à haute tension en appliquant la technologie de surface ALD de PosiNano » et « Nous espérons recevoir des commandes d'ingénierie de systèmes à grande échelle dans un avenir proche en participant à la construction de la gigafactory de PosiNano sur la base de cet investissement. »
